Every valid answer lands in exactly one of six tiers by crowd rarity: Plankton (10 points), Too Clever (15), Schooler (30), Rare (60), Deep Cut (85), and at the top, One in a Krillion (100). How scarce is the cap? Across the 371 prompts logged in our archive since launch, there are exactly 425 One in a Krillion answers — about 1.1 per prompt, and never more than 2 on a single prompt. Seven prompts have no perfect answer at all. The tier is not a target you can farm; it is a ceiling that occasionally gets touched.
What a perfect answer actually looks like
Four real ones from the sheets, each stranger and more specific than you'd guess:
- Novotny — for September 2's "name a chess term" prompt, the only perfect answer above a staggering 363 Deep Cuts. A Novotny is an interference sacrifice so obscure most club players never meet one.
- Ophicleide — August 24's "name a brass instrument" prompt. A keyed 19th-century bass brass instrument — while the Plankton tier was trombone, trumpet and tuba.
- Jordan — August 22's "name a country with a coastline on the Indian Ocean" prompt. Jordan's 26 kilometers of Gulf of Aqaba coastline legally qualify — and almost nobody's first association goes there.
- Miracle fruit — August 29's "name a fruit" prompt, the single perfect answer floating above 759 Deep Cuts. The berry that makes sour things taste sweet.

Can you improve your odds?
Honestly — only at the margins. You cannot force a One in a Krillion, and chasing it blind is how players bust with invalid guesses. What you can do is widen the water you fish in: sweep categories by structure instead of free-associating, and study past sheets until you can feel which corners of a category stay uncrowded. Where the name comes from
The tier name is a joke with a pedigree. In the 2011 animated film Happy Feet 2, a tiny krill named Will — one small creature among the countless krill of the Southern Ocean — breaks from the swarm and declares: "I am one in a krillion." The line found a second life as a TikTok meme around 2023, and the game borrows it for exactly the right tier: the one answer in the swarm that swam its own way. The deep-sea naming is consistent all the way down — the commonest tier is Plankton, and your score sinks you from the sunlight zone toward the trench.
Not to be confused with…
Two same-name neighbors worth disambiguating. One in a Krillion is also a 2024 action game from DigiPen on Steam — entirely unrelated to the word game; if you wanted the interdimensional action platformer, this article is not about it.
